The two newest Coast Guard Cutters have officially joined our fleet!
•
Today, Adm. Karl Schultz, the commandant of the Coast Guard, presided over the dual commissioning ceremony of the Coast Guard Cutters Kimball (WMSL 756) and Midgett (WMSL 757).
•
The cutters are homeported in Honolulu and are two of the Coast Guard’s new legend-class National Security Cutters.
•
National Security Cutters are capable of executing the most challenging national security missions, including support to U.S. combatant commanders. These new cutters are replacing the high endurance Hamilton-class cutters (378 feet) that have been in service since the 1960s.
•
“In todays complex, geo-strategic environment, hallmarked by great power competition the importance and demand of Coast Guard capabilities has never been more important,” said Schultz. “Across the nation, wherever the Coast Guard finds itself, we always form a special bond in the communities where we serve and today we build upon those community bonds right here in Honolulu.”

Happy Birthday to Duke Kahanamoku!

Most people know him as the father of modern surfing. He was a waterman, surfer, Olympic swimmer, and lifeguard.

Duke Paoa Kahinu Mokoe Hulikohola Kahanamoku also served in the Coast Guard as a Temporary Reserve for the U.S. Coast Guard during World War II (1939-1945). He famously helped rescue the lives of 12 people from a 40-foot fishing boat off the California coast in 1925. And he maintained his ties to the Coast Guard after WWII and in 1966, he was appointed Honorary District Commodore of the U.S. Coast Guard Auxiliary in Hawaii.

What better way to celebrate than with today’s dual commissioning of two Coast Guard cutter’s here in his home of Honolulu!

On Wednesday, Admiral Karl Schultz, the commandant of the U.S. Coast Guard, presented the crew of the Coast Guard Cutter Midgett (WMSL 757) with their first drug bust decals.

The crew of the Midgett conducted two boardings in July while transiting to their new homeport in Honolulu resulting in a combined seizure of over 6,700 pounds of cocaine, estimated to be worth over $89 million.

Tomorrow, Schultz will preside over a dual commissioning ceremony at Base Honolulu for both the Midgett and its sibling ship the Coast Guard Cutter Kimball (WMSL 756).

The ceremony, starting at 10 a.m., will be streamed live from our Facebook page.

Happy Wednesday!

One of the Coast Guard’s main missions is Living Marine Resources and we take great pleasure working with our partners in the Hawaiian Islands to preserve this unique and important ecosystem.

The U.S. Coast Guard, National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) and The Marine Mammal Center at Ke Kai Ola recently released the Hawaiian monk seal RH38 on Kaua’i after being successfully rehabilitated.

“For an endangered marine mammal like the Hawaiian monk seal, the release of every individual is critical to help boost the overall population,” said Dr. Shawn Johnson, vice president of Veterinary Medicine and Science at The Marine Mammal Center. “RH38’s recovery is an incredible success story that was full of medical complexities and highlights the importance of our ongoing partnerships to help save this species.”

National Aviation Day celebrates the development of aviation. The holiday was established in 1939 by Franklin Delano Roosevelt, who issued a presidential proclamation which designated the anniversary of Orville Wright's birthday to be National Aviation Day.

When the Wright Brothers fashioned their plane we were there! We helped with the build!

December 17, 1903
Life-Saving Service personnel from Kill Devil Hills Life-Saving Station helped carry materials to the launch site for the first successful heavier-than-air aircraft flight by the Wright Brothers at Kitty Hawk, NC. The life-savers were John T. Daniels, W.S. Dough and A.D. Etheridge.

April 1, 1916
Second Lieutenant Charles E. Sugden and Third Lieutenant Elmer F. Stone received orders to attend aviation training at Pensacola Naval Air Station. This date is considered to be the "birthday" of Coast Guard Aviation.

The Coast Guard aviation community consists of approximately 800 pilots and an enlisted workforce of approximately 2,500.

Already a pilot? Want to fly with us? The Direct Commission Aviator program is designed to meet aviation needs by seeking trained and qualified commissioned military pilots from other services to access into the Coast Guard.

Bravo Zulu to the crews from U.S. Coast Guard Station Honolulu, Honolulu County Fire Department and Ocean Safety Lifeguard Services for their rescue of six paddlers off Diamond Head, Sunday!

There were no injuries reported. An Ocean Safely Jet ski operator towed the canoe to shore with one of the boaters. The remaining five were rescued and taken by a Station Honolulu 45-foot Response Boat-Medium crew to Ke’ehi Boat Harbor.

“The boaters made the right call by notifying the Honolulu Fire Department of their predicament quickly,” said Petty Officer 2nd Class Alvin Sequin, a U.S. Coast Guard Sector Honolulu watchstander. “It is always best to play it safe when out on the water and report if you believe you are in trouble. We recommend waterway users take multiple forms of communication for this purpose - cell phones, marine radios, and personal locator beacons.”

We started the weekend by gathering up our lei and welcoming USCGC William Hart (WPC 1134) home! 🌺🤙

William Hart is the last of the three FRCs to be stationed in Hawaii. The crew transited the vessel from Key West, Florida, following delivery and preparation for sailing. Three more are scheduled to be homeported in Guam, increasing the Coast Guard 14th District's total number of FRCs to six. As a whole, the Coast Guard is currently acquiring 56 FRCs to replace the 110-foot Island-class patrol boats.

Recently the FRCs already stationed in Honolulu participated in longer over-the-horizon voyages to the Republic of the Marshall Islands and Samoa displaying the potential of these cutters and their importance to the Coast Guard's overall Pacific strategy and regional partnerships.

William Hart, the cutter's namesake, was a Gold Lifesaving Medal recipient who rescued a crewmember of the tug Thomas Tracy. In 1927 Hart dove into the water in a 70-mph gale off Absecon, New Jersey, to save the mariner who went overboard in the storm.

Throughout the '30s, Hart served in the Army Corps of Engineers before returning to the Coast Guard in 1939, advancing to the paygrade of E-7 or Chief Petty Officer serving as a boatswain's mate. Once the United States entered World War II, Hart was commissioned as a lieutenant junior grade and served in both the Atlantic and Pacific theaters. He retired from the Coast Guard in 1950.

Coast Guard Sector Honolulu, to whom the cutter crew will report, plans to commission the William Hart in a ceremony Sept. 26.

Happy #alohafriday and welcome home Midgett!!! 🌺🤙

The U.S. Coast Guard Cutter Midgett (WMSL 757) arrived at its new homeport in Honolulu Friday.

The Midgett's transit to Hawaii was punctuated by two interdictions of suspected low-profile go-fast vessels in the Eastern Pacific Ocean, the first July 25 and a second July 31. The boardings resulted in a combined seizure of over 6,700 pounds of cocaine, estimated to be worth over $89 million.

"The national security cutter gets you further faster and delivers more capability once on-scene than any other cutter in the history of our service," said Capt. Alan McCabe, Midgett's commanding officer. "I am incredibly proud of the crew's efforts making these two seizures possible, and we are eager to conduct future operations throughout the Pacific."

The Midgett is the eighth of the Coast Guard's national security cutters and the second to be homeported in Hawaii. Its sister ship, the Coast Guard Cutter Kimball (WMSL 756) arrived Dec. 22, 2018. Both cutters are scheduled to be commissioned Aug. 24 during a ceremony presided over by Adm. Karl Schultz, the Coast Guard's commandant.

Midgett is named to honor all members of the Midgett family who served in the Coast Guard and its predecessor services. At least ten members of the family earned high honors for their heroic lifesaving efforts. Among them, the Coast Guard awarded various family members seven gold lifesaving medals, the service's highest award for saving a life, and three silver lifesaving medals.

The crew of the Indonesian-flagged fishing vessel KM Aleluya are safe and sound after being transferred to a Palau patrol boat by good Samaritans aboard the Amver vessel Isl Star.

The KM Aleluya was adrift for ten days without electricity, food, and water before being rescued through a joint effort between U.S. Coast Guard Sector Guam, United States Air Force, 日本 海上保安庁/Japan Coast Guard, good Samaritans, and Palau first responders.

The U.S. Coast Guard Cutter Kiska (WPB 1336) located the abandoned KM Aleluya and will tow the vessel back to Palau as well.

This case shows how important our local, regional, and international partnerships are to search and rescue efforts in the Pacific Ocean. Through teamwork we are able to quickly and efficiently respond to life-threatening situations with the greatest chance of success in this vast region.

History of the Fourteenth District

Revenue Cutter LogoThe Revenue Cutter Lawrence sailed into Honolulu Harbor Sept. 4, 1849, escorted by Native Hawaiians in outrigger canoes. This marked the beginning of the U. S. Coast Guard presence in the Pacific. For the next 90 years, cutters from the West Coast routinely plied Hawaii’s waters on patrols. In 1939, the Fourteenth Coast Guard District was established ashore in Honolulu with 230 personnel.

Today, more than 1,150 active duty, 150 reserve, 80 civilian, and 400 Auxiliary men and women make up the Fourteenth District, which boasts the Coast Guard’s largest area of responsibility. The district covers more than 14 million square miles of land and sea, with units on Oahu, Maui, Kauai, the Big Island, and in American Samoa, Saipan, Guam, Singapore and Japan.

The Fourteenth District’s boundaries of responsibility stretch from the Hawaiian Islands and across most of the Central and Western Pacific. The District Commander oversees 25 operational units ashore and afloat throughout the Pacific, which regularly perform missions in maritime safety, protection of natural resources, maritime security, homeland security, and national defense. In 1939, the Fourteenth District was comprised of one 327-foot cutter, two 125-foot patrol boats, two buoy tenders, five small boats and 64 aids to navigation.
