Local Information

Aloha Nui Loa!

Maui is known as the Valley Isle. It is the largest and most populous island of this four-island county. Approximately 150,000 residents call Maui home. The population is ethnically and economically diverse.

Tourism, government and agriculture provide most of the jobs on this Pacific paradise. Kahului is the largest town and is where the airport and "big-box" stores are located. Smaller population centers are found in Kihei, Lahaina, Pa'ia, and Hana.

The Hawaiian Chamber of Commerce is a good place to begin your exploration of our island. Because of the year-round mild climate, recreational opportunities center around the outdoors. Swimming, surfing, hiking and picnicking are all popular pastimes. University of Hawaii/Maui Community College both have campuses on the island.

There are several multiplex movie theaters that show first-run films. Maui is also home to the internationally known Maui Arts and Cultural Center. We call it the MACC. They present a variety of top flight entertainment, some of which is free or modestly priced.

Yes; Food, gas and housing are all expensive on Maui. But going to the beach or hiking are free and driving distances are limited because we're on an island, after all.

The Islands of Lanai and Molokai have their own attractions and personality. Both can be reached by ferry.
